Czech Crystal Adorns a Historic Town Hall on the Azores

Added 18.11.2024 9:38.24

When you think of the Azores, many envision an exotic paradise in the heart of the Atlantic. It is here, on the island of São Jorge, in the picturesque town of Velas, that two of our magnificent Maria Theresa chandeliers have found their new home. Yes, it’s true – our crystal chandeliers journeyed to the very edge of Europe to illuminate an 18th-century town hall.

A Brown Lizard in the Atlantic

São Jorge, also known as the "Brown Island," resembles the rugged back of a lizard diving into the blue depths of the ocean when seen from above. This small piece of land was first discovered around 1439 but wasn't settled until after 1460. Today, the island is a haven for lovers of history, nature, and unique architectural treasures.

Velas: Ancient Streets and the Sparkle of Crystal

The town of Velas, the island's main hub, enchants visitors with its narrow cobblestone streets, houses with wrought-iron balconies, and its historic 18th-century town gate. A notable landmark is the Igreja Matriz de São Jorge church, built in 1460, which stands as a testament to the town's long and vibrant history.

Not far from this church, in the Jardim da República park, stands the Baroque town hall, now graced by two silver-toned Maria Theresa chandeliers.

Imperial Elegance in the Town Hall Velas Azory

Imperial Elegance in the Town Hall

Luxurious Maria Theresa chandeliers are named after Empress Maria Theresa, whose coronation inspired the creation of these lighting masterpieces. Their design is reminiscent of a royal crown.

Each chandelier features flat steel arms adorned with crystal strips and decorated with crystal rosettes. The silver plating on the steel arms gives the chandeliers a subtle shimmer, while the precisely cut crystal pendants refract light into all the colors of the rainbow. The two chandeliers in the Azorean town hall, each with 19 bulbs, now illuminate not only the interior but also the story of this Baroque architectural gem.

A Fusion of History and Czech Craftsmanship

Our chandeliers now adorn a place where Azorean history meets Czech mastery. If you ever find yourself on São Jorge, be sure to visit the town hall in Velas and see how Czech crystal adds a fresh brilliance to a Baroque interior.

And who knows? You might be inspired to enhance your own home with a crystal masterpiece – in gold or silver.
