Iconic Chandeliers Through the Centuries, Part One: Circular Elegance, Brass Glamour and Murano Mystery

Added 4.4.2024 11:09.46

From the first flames that dispelled the darkness in the caves of our ancestors to the vibrant light installations that transform modern spaces today. The journey of chandelier design is an epic story of human creativity, reflecting both technological advances and changes in taste and culture.

The first step in the evolution of chandelier design was oil lamps with a circular metal tray on which glass oil lamps were placed. Although they provided valuable illumination, their drawbacks such as frequent maintenance, high risk of fire and unpleasant smoke smell led to the necessity to look for more innovative and safer solutions. This challenge triggered a continuous evolution in chandelier design, towards more modern materials and technologies that improved both the aesthetics and functionality of lighting.

Although the design of chandeliers is evolving, the latest trends in lighting design show that even today the circular shape still has its irreplaceable place. Today, the circular shape is popular in design for its ability to evoke a sense of calm and harmony. Intriguingly, the circular shape has deep symbolic meanings in cultures around the world, from unity, perfection and infinity.

New to our range is a stunning circular light fixture that embodies a fusion of traditional elegance and modern design. This chandelier is made up of a golden circular base in which crystal prisms are set and is illuminated by two rows of LED strips. The design of the chandelier is minimalistic yet luxurious. It is designed to fit a variety of interiors and bring a subtle elegance to them.

Other iconic types of chandeliers are the so-called Flemish Chandelier, which had their heyday in the 17th century during the Golden Age of the Netherlands. They were made of brass or bronze, and the characteristic design element is the axe-shaped spirals and plant tendrils. These elements reflected the prosperity of Dutch trade and the desire for knowledge and nature.

In our range you will find brass chandeliers that are very popular for their rustic look. They fit perfectly not only in interiors with country charm, but also in modernly furnished spaces, to which they add an interesting contrast and enhance its character.

brass chandeliers

The first all-glass chandeliers were Venetian chandeliers from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, which originated on the island of Murano near Venice and are world famous for their unique quality and design. This tradition of glassmaking represents mastery passed down from generation to generation and is characterised by its wide range of styles.

Discover lighting fixtures that reflect the legacy of Murano glassmaking in our collection. We offer a diverse range of designs from subtly elegant to highly complex and detailed models. The collection is characterised by organic lines and curves, as well as more sophisticated motifs such as grape vines, all in the style of traditional Murano chandeliers.

Interesting fact: In order to preserve its monopoly on the glassmaking craft, the Republic of Venice forbade Murano glassmakers to leave the island and share their art with foreign countries, on pain of death. This measure not only protected trade secrets, but also prevented fires from spreading from the glassworks into the densely populated Venetian areas.

The glamorous world of Czech lighting fixtures is so rich that a single article is not enough to present all its beauty and historical significance.

With that in mind, anticipate the upcoming chapter, where we will explore the luxuriousrealm of Maria Theresa chandeliers and ascend with the balloon-inspired chandeliers, known as montgolfières.
