How to easily clean a crystal chandelier?

At ArtCrystal Tomeš we use this method ourselves to care for more than 250 light fittings in our showroom in Jablonec nad Nisou, the historic centre of Czech glassmaking. From small wall lights to richly decorated Bohemian crystal chandeliers, we want every one of them to be seen at its full brilliance. The guide below shows how to clean a crystal chandelier step by step, which product we use and which mistakes to avoid.

How often should a crystal chandelier be cleaned?

In an ordinary home, a thorough clean once a year is usually enough. In between, settled dust can be removed carefully with a soft duster. In kitchens and restaurants, chandeliers collect grease and cooking residue as well as dust. More frequent cleaning may also be needed in rooms where people smoke or candles are lit regularly. In those conditions we recommend cleaning according to how soiled the fitting is, usually twice a year.

The crystal itself is the best guide. When it loses its sparkle, the reflections become weaker and the glass looks hazy, it is time to clean. Alongside dust, airborne residue settles on the surface and gradually takes away the brilliance.

What should you use to clean a crystal chandelier?

When choosing a product, remember that a chandelier is not made of crystal alone. The cleaner also comes into contact with the metal frame, the hooks and many small connectors. It therefore has to be suitable for every material it touches and for their finishes.

For cleaning without dismantling, there is the ArtCrystal crystal chandelier cleaner in a 750 ml bottle. It is applied with the spray head, and the loosened dirt drips off with the product onto the sheet below. Individual crystal drops do not have to be taken down and polished by hand.

How to clean a crystal chandelier without taking it apart

Careful preparation saves the most time. Have the cleaner, floor protection and a stable stepladder ready so that you can reach the fitting comfortably. The bulbs must be completely cool before you start.

1. Disconnect the fitting from the power supply

Switch off the relevant circuit breaker and make sure nobody can switch the power back on while you work. Turning the light off at the wall switch is not enough.

2. Protect the floor and the surroundings

Lay a waterproof sheet under the chandelier and an absorbent layer on top of it — old towels or a bed sheet, for example. This catches the product as it drips and the dissolved dirt with it. Cover nearby furniture as well if needed.

3. Remove the bulbs and protect the electrical parts

Following the manufacturer instructions, take out the cooled bulbs and protect the sockets and other electrical parts from any liquid getting in, for example with a cosmetic pad. The product must not reach them.

4. Spray the cleaner on and let the dirt drip away

Spray the cleaner evenly onto the crystal and the suitable metal parts so that it can run down them and carry the loosened dirt with it. Avoid the sockets and the wiring. Let the product drip freely onto the sheet below — no rubbing, no polishing.

5. Check the result

Look over the grooves, the undersides of the drops and other places where dirt can remain. Do not pull on the trimmings and do not rotate the whole chandelier.

6. Let the chandelier dry completely

Once it has stopped dripping, remove the protective coverings and give the fitting enough time to dry completely. Pay particular attention to the sockets and to any place where liquid could collect. A dry crystal surface does not yet mean the electrical parts are dry.

7. Dry the fitting and put the bulbs back

While the fitting is still disconnected, absorb any remaining droplets from accessible places with a soft dry cloth. Before refitting the bulbs, check that the sockets and the whole fitting are completely dry. Then screw the bulbs back in and restore the power.

The main advantage of cleaning without dismantling is that the fragile parts are barely handled. There is no taking down the trimmings, carrying them around or working out where each piece belongs when rehanging. If some parts do have to come off, photograph their arrangement first.

How much cleaner will you need?

For a medium-sized six- to eight-arm chandelier, a 750 ml bottle lasts roughly two to three cleans. Actual consumption depends on the amount of crystal trimming, how intricate the fitting is and how soiled it has become.

On a large chandelier with dense trimmings, a whole bottle can go on a single clean. Have enough product ready before you start so that you can finish the job comfortably.

What should you avoid when cleaning?

An ordinary window cleaner is not necessarily suitable for the metal parts of a chandelier. It cleans glass well but can attack the lacquer or another finish on the frame. Use only products the manufacturer confirms as suitable for the materials involved.

Rough sponges, scouring powders and other abrasives are unsuitable too — they can scratch the surface. Soap solutions, if not rinsed off properly, leave a film and streaks.

Never clean a chandelier while it is switched on, or shortly after switching it off while the bulbs are still hot. Handle the fitting as little as possible and do not try to reach distant parts by leaning out from the ladder.

What about a chandelier above a staircase or in a high hall?

With a chandelier above a staircase or under a high ceiling, safe access is what matters most. If you cannot reach it comfortably from a stable stepladder, leave the cleaning to professionals. Depending on the position and construction of the fitting, an access platform, scaffolding or professional lowering of the chandelier may be required.

• • • Does a crystal chandelier have to be dismantled for cleaning?

For many fittings it does not. A suitable cleaner removes the dirt directly from the hanging chandelier. It always depends, though, on the construction, the materials and the manufacturer recommendation.

Not without checking that it is suitable. The risk lies mainly with the metal parts and their finishes, which an unsuitable product can damage.
